Periagna – New herbal medicinal product for Premenstrual Syndrome
Since the days of classical Greece, during the time of Socrates and Aristotle, it has been known that the chaste-tree (Vitex Agnus-castus) was a plant associated with women and featured prominently in temple worship and ritual.
Today, Bio-Health is proud to announce Periagna® as the traditional herbal medicinal product used to help relieve premenstrual symptoms such as irritability, mood swings, breast tenderness, bloating and menstrual cramps, based on traditional use.
The product has been registered under the Government’s Traditional Herbal Registration scheme administered by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. The packaging, providing full consumer information, displays the THR trademark (owned by the MHRA) to demonstrate to the public the product has been assessed for quality and safety.
Periagna® is the first UK produced vitex agnus-castus medicine to gain registration, which was granted in February 2011. It guarantees that the contents of each capsule are exactly as stated on the packaging, and that the product is safe when taken at the prescribed dose.
“Periagna® joins our Purefil range, which means that each capsule contains nothing but the herbal product indicated,” said June Crisp, marketing director of Bio-Health. “As in the case of vitex agnus-castus, many have been used to good effect for centuries.”
Periagna® is the latest of four Bio-Health products to achieve registration under the Government scheme. It joins:
- Hyperidrine®, St John’s Wort, used to relieve symptoms of low mood and anxiety
- Salvian®, medicinal sage, used for the relief of night sweats associated with menstruation
- Valdrian®, valerian product for the relief of mild anxiety and to aid sleep
“At Bio-Health we believe strongly in the benefits of the Traditional Herbal Registration scheme,” said Mrs Crisp. “This regulatory scheme heralds an exciting and positive future for natural medicines and provides the consumer, who wishes to choose, the assurance that the products they are taking are legal and safe when used as instructed.
We believe patients using our products should have the re-assurance that a regulatory organisation has assessed them, against very strict pharmaceutical criteria.”
